oneROOF Youth Services Prevention & Diversion:

Host Homes

Host Homes and Family Reconnect work collaboratively under the Prevention & Diversion umbrella here at oneROOF Youth Services to prevent youth from entering the shelter system and divert them away from the cycle of homelessness. The following information pertains to Host Homes.

What is Host Homes?

The Host Homes program has been in oporation at oneROOF Youth Services since 2018. It initially began as a three year pilot project; after significant success, the Host Homes Model was established as a permanent program to compliment the wealth of other services available through oneROOF Youth Services.

The Host Homes Model is recognized as a best-practice Prevention & Diversion Strategy that provides short term housing for youth experiencing homelessness outside of a shelter setting.

The purpose of Host Homes is to prevent youth (ages 16-25) from entering into the cycle of homelessness. Youth who are referred to our organization are assessed for potential participation in this program. Once accepted, they are matched with a Host Home Provider.

What is a Host Home Provider?

Host Home Providers (HHPs) are members of our community that have been onboarded to host youth accepted into the program. These households are diverse and may range from single individuals, couples, or large families with children. The HHP will provide the youth with a room in their home and receive monthly compensation for room and board. Staff at oneROOF Youth Services provide ongoing support to both youth and HHPs.

The goal of these short term stays is to enable the youth to remain safe and secure while working with oneROOF Youth Services staff to obtain permanent, stable housing and work on personal goals. The length of stays vary based on individual need and the provider’s availability. On average, stays range from 30-90 days.

Host Home Providers are neither landlords nor guardians; the aim is simply to provide a ‘homelike’ setting and pro-social connection to a young person who would otherwise be entering an emergency shelter. Youth with greater needs, or for whom greater support is required, will continue to access shelter as both Host Homes and the oneROOF Youth Services Emergency Shelter, Providing A Roof (PAR) are part of a continuum of service for youth experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

“We saw the article about the Host Homes program in the Kitchener Post.  We talked about it and felt that this was something we could see ourselves doing.  We’ve always believed that you can’t help everyone, but you can help someone.  The Host Homes program makes sure that the Host Home providers are clearance checked and they also screen the youth.  The youth that are accepted into the program are low risk.  They are young people who have not had an easy start in life.  We have been hosting since 2019 and have hosted 6 youth so far.  Their stories, if they choose to share, remind us of how lucky we were to have a safe and stable start.  To help another achieve a sense of belonging is truly wonderful.  To this day we still keep in touch with some of these youth.  It’s rewarding to know that what we are doing is making a positive difference in someone’s life.” — Anonymous Provider

“I read about oneROOF’s Host Home pilot in the newspaper and immediately felt drawn to it.  My husband had died a year earlier and my children had both moved to other cities for education and work. I did not want to leave our family home and felt I could do some good with my space and my time, by inviting youth in during their time of transition.  I have hosted 2 young women in my home over the past 2 years.  I learned much from these young women and was also able to provide support and guidance to them when needed.  oneROOF has done a good job matching me with participants and have been sensitive to my needs as a single host.” — Anonymous Provider

“I got to see what it was like to be in a happy and healthy home. I bonded really easily with my hosts, and they helped me so much. I benefited tremendously from this program and I hope that more homes participate so that the program can thrive.”- Anonymous Youth, 2022

“Being newer to Canada It was so comforting to be in a good home with kind people, they are like a second family to me now. This experience showed me there are good people in the world who are willing to help, so don’t be afraid to ask.” – Anonymous Youth, 2018

“I didn’t stay with my hosts for long, I was able to find work and get a rental in under a month because I really wanted my own space. I like that my hosts respected my need for privacy, and didn’t really pressure me to socialize or spend time with them, because I prefer to keep to myself and do my own thing.”- Anonymous Youth, 2021

“They really do respect my personal space and my independence, they supported me academically, if I need help with school work or something.
